Of the desire to know God more intimately

lord, I want, not now to know
with simply words that cannot go
and peer into thy wounded chest
or gaze upon thy beating breast

but, saviour, let me know it whole
with all my mind and heart and soul
though angels tremble when they say
this wonder which yet words convey:

"he loves a sinner unto death!"
"he loves him 'til his final breath!"
he loves a worm and such am I!
he loves me still enough to die!
