Thailand

November 2000

Thailand was a very suitable introduction to South East Asia - it has a sample of everything you will see in the region:
Steamy weather, beautiful beaches, exotic food, natural wonders,
Polluted cities, idol worship, con artists, drug traffickers,
The best and the worst the world has to offer!

My first Tuk-Tuk driver, who "took me for a ride" in more than one sense!

It was something of a shock adjusting to the accommodation standards which would become normal for me over the next 7 months.
The room on the left is actually a converted bathroom. I spent half a day in this room waiting for the monsoon outside to stop.
In fact it was just a leaking pipe behind the window and it was gloriously sunny outside.

This statue is referred to as 'Standing Buddha' and not to be confused with 'Sitting Buddha' who resides around the corner.
Being a stupid, dead, dumb, deaf and mute idol does somewhat limit the range of activies available to you,
but both sitting and standing are well within his capabilities.

But is this not jumping Buddha? Or perhaps the bishop of Thailand taking in some leisure at Kanchaburi National Park!

Some lovely rock pools high in the mountainous national park of Kanchanaburi

Circum-navigating the island of Kho Samet. Actually, 'circum-navigating' is a slight exaggeration.

As it turns out, the beach was just as comfortable as the hostel rooms, a little bit cheaper and a lot cleaner
(as long as you don't mind malaria carrying mosquitoes, wild dogs and drug dealers)!
Bedding down for the night on Kho Samet.
